2026 Small Business
Happiness Report

Ahead of National Small Business Week, we took a look at the current state of small business happiness. Little spoiler? Despite navigating a year of uncertainty, data shows entrepreneurs are happy, resilient and fulfilling their dreams.

Optimism and resilience are high

New research paints a strikingly optimistic portrait of America’s entrepreneurs. Despite macro headwinds, today’s small business owners aren’t just surviving – they’re thriving. In fact, 61% say they’re happier now compared to when they first opened their doors, and nearly half (43%) report being happier than they were last year.

“What I enjoy most about working for myself is the autonomy to decide what is most important at any given moment.”

— Kiki Couchman & Elan Halpern, Sourmilk (VistaPrint Ambassadors)

Why’s everyone so dang happy?

The owners finding the most fulfillment are those focused on what they can control. Of those who report being happier today than when they first opened their small business, 38% attribute it to internal, day-to-day factors, rather than external or macroeconomic conditions (11%).

Alongside autonomy, other top factors include pursuing a passion (47%) and their ability to control the certainty of their income (35%).

The (very real) challenges

Business ownership brings trade-offs – and small business owners are clear on the realities (and difficulties) they face.

In addition to income uncertainty, poor work-life balance (40%) and keeping up with evolving business trends (38%) are the other top pain points. But while the pressures are real, the majority feel confident in their choices, with 83% reporting they’re happier now compared to when they worked for someone else.

Happiness is shared

Happiness in small business ownership can be shared by the whole team. 80% of small business owners report that their employees seem happy.

“There’s just something within me that knows I’m heading in the right direction.”

— Maria Colalancia, Apertivo (VistaPrint Ambassador)

Confidence in the future is strong

Despite uncertainties, 70% of small businesses are optimistic about the future and express confidence in their ability to grow. Their top three investments for the year ahead include marketing and customer acquisition (51%), business operations (51%), investing in staff (34%) and technology and automation (34%).
